Getting around Egypt: FAQs

How far apart are the main sights in Egypt?

Egypt is big: Luxor is about 500 km south of Cairo as the crow flies (about an hour by air), Aswan about 680 km, and Abu Simbel about 850 km. Alexandria is about 180 km north-west of Cairo and Siwa about 560 km west. Most visitors fly between Cairo and Luxor or Aswan and cruise the Nile between them. See domestic flights in Egypt.

Where are the main tourist areas of Egypt?

Most trips combine Cairo and Giza (the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum), the Nile Valley between Luxor and Aswan (temples, tombs and the Nile cruise), Abu Simbel in the far south, and the Red Sea coast or Sinai for beaches and reefs. Alexandria, the Western Desert oases and Fayoum add variety. Browse all Egypt destinations.

Which part of Egypt is best for a first trip?

Cairo and Giza plus a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan cover the essential ancient sites; add Abu Simbel if you can. With more time, finish on the Red Sea. Our Classic Egypt & Nile Cruise follows exactly that route.
