In short
The White Desert is a national park in Egypt's Western Desert, famous for wind-sculpted chalk formations that glow white and pink at sunset. Most visitors reach it by 4WD from Bahariya Oasis and camp overnight, making it Egypt's most memorable desert experience.
About 500 km southwest of Cairo, between Bahariya and Farafra Oases, the White Desert (Sahara el-Beida) is a landscape of chalk pinnacles and mushroom-shaped rocks rising from the sand. They were formed from the remains of ancient marine creatures when the area lay under sea, then eroded by sandstorms into shapes known as the Mushroom and the Chicken. The area has been a protected national park since 2002.
The usual trip combines several landscapes in one: the Black Desert, where volcanic basalt caps the hills; Crystal Mountain, a ridge of quartz crystals; the Agabat valley of dramatic dunes and cliffs; and finally the White Desert itself, where you make camp. Bedouin guides cook dinner over a fire, and you sleep under a sky of extraordinary stars, often visited by curious fennec foxes.
It is reached from Bahariya Oasis, about 4–5 hours' drive from Cairo, home to the Valley of the Golden Mummies (discovered in 1996) and hot springs. Travel advice for the Western Desert can differ from the rest of Egypt, so check Smartraveller before you go.
Top things to see in White Desert
The Mushroom and the Chicken
The two most famous chalk formations, a mushroom-shaped pinnacle and a rock resembling a chicken beside a tree-like column. They are best photographed in the late afternoon and at sunrise.
The Black Desert
Between Bahariya and Farafra, the hills are capped with dark volcanic rock, giving a landscape of black-topped cones on orange sand. A short climb up English Mountain, named for a British WWI lookout post, gives the classic view.
Crystal Mountain
A rocky ridge studded with quartz crystals, a quick stop on the drive south.
Agabat valley
A valley of tall, wind-carved cliffs and dunes, one of the most spectacular landscapes on the route and a favourite for sandboarding.
Bahariya Oasis
The gateway town of Bawiti has hot and cold springs and a small museum displaying several of the Golden Mummies, Graeco-Roman burials with gilded masks.
The Old White Desert
Deeper in the park, larger and more dramatic formations stand in fields that only experienced drivers reach. Ask your operator if it can be included on a two-night trip.
Unforgettable experiences
- Camping overnight among the chalk formations with a Bedouin dinner
- Watching the formations glow pink and orange at sunset
- Stargazing in one of the darkest skies in Egypt
- Sandboarding in the Agabat dunes
- A hot spring soak in Bahariya after the desert
When to visit White Desert
October to April is best, when days are warm (20–28°C) and nights cold, sometimes near freezing in December and January. Summer is too hot for comfortable camping. A trip near the new moon gives the best stargazing.
How long to spend in White Desert
A two-day, one-night trip from Cairo covers the main sights, but involves about 10 hours of driving. Three days and two nights is much more relaxing and allows time in Bahariya and the Old White Desert.
Getting there
Drive about 4–5 hours from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, then continue by 4WD with an experienced desert operator. Permits are needed and are arranged by your operator. Travel advice for the Western Desert can differ from the rest of Egypt, so check Smartraveller before booking.
