Best Time to Visit Egypt: Month-by-Month Guide

Quick answer

The best time to visit Egypt is October to April, when Cairo sits around 20–30°C and Luxor and Aswan around 23–35°C by day. December to February is the coolest and busiest period; October, November, March and April balance warm weather with fewer crowds. Summer (June to August) regularly exceeds 40°C in Upper Egypt but suits the Red Sea and bargain hunters.

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April. Days are warm and sunny, nights are cool, and sightseeing in the open-air temples of Luxor and Aswan is comfortable from morning to mid-afternoon. Within that window, the very best months for most Australians are late October, November, early December, February and March.

Egypt has two meaningful seasons: a mild winter (November to March) and a long, hot summer (May to September). It barely rains, so the decision is about heat and crowds rather than weather risk. The further south you go, the hotter it gets: Aswan is usually 3–6°C warmer than Cairo.

What is the weather in Egypt month by month?

Average daytime highs range from about 19°C in Cairo in January to 41°C in Luxor and Aswan in July. The table below shows typical average highs and lows. Individual days vary, and heatwaves happen in spring and summer.

December21°C / 10°C24–25°C / 8–10°CExcellent; very busy over Christmas

Figures are typical long-term averages, rounded. Desert nights in the White Desert and Siwa can drop close to freezing in December and January.

Is December to February the best time to go?

December to February offers the most comfortable temperatures but also the biggest crowds and highest prices. This is Egypt's high season, and it overlaps with the Australian summer school holidays and the European winter escape. Luxury Nile ships, dahabiyas and hotels such as the Marriott Mena House and the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract book out months ahead for Christmas and New Year.

If you travel in this window, book 6–12 months out, plan very early starts at the Valley of the Kings and Giza, and pack a warm jacket: Cairo mornings can be 9–10°C and a dawn balloon flight over Luxor is genuinely cold. Days, though, are perfect for walking around Karnak.

Which are the best shoulder-season months?

Late October, November and March are the sweet spots: warm, reliably sunny and noticeably less crowded than mid-winter.

  • October: still hot in Aswan early in the month (mid-30s) but easing fast. Abu Simbel's sun festival on 22 October, when sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary, is a bucket-list event; book well ahead.
  • November: arguably the best month overall. Pleasant everywhere, the Red Sea is still warm enough for swimming (around 25–27°C water), and peak-season pricing doesn't start until mid-December.
  • March: warm days and green fields along the Nile. Watch for the khamsin, a hot, dusty wind that can blow for a day or two in March and April.
  • April: good for Cairo and Alexandria; the south is hot by midday. Easter can be busy with European visitors.

Can you visit Egypt in summer?

Yes, but expect 40°C-plus in Luxor and Aswan and plan sightseeing for early morning only. June to August is low season, so prices for hotels and cruises fall and sites are quieter. The heat is dry, which helps, but it is draining, and several dahabiyas stop sailing in the hottest months.

Summer suits travellers who want a beach-heavy trip. The Red Sea resorts of Hurghada, El Gouna and Sharm el-Sheikh have warm water (up to around 28–29°C) and are ideal for snorkelling and diving. A summer itinerary might be 2–3 nights in Cairo with the Grand Egyptian Museum (air-conditioned), a short cruise, then a week on the coast. Australians travelling in the July school holidays often choose the Egypt and Red Sea 14-day tour.

How does Ramadan affect the best time to visit?

You can travel during Ramadan with little disruption to sightseeing, but expect shorter opening hours at some places and a quieter daytime atmosphere. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it is expected to fall roughly from early February to early March, with exact dates depending on the sighting of the moon.

Tourist sites, hotels and cruise ships operate normally, and restaurants catering to visitors stay open. The evenings are festive, especially in Islamic Cairo after iftar. Read travelling Egypt during Ramadan for practical tips.

What is the best time for a Nile cruise, the pyramids and the Red Sea?

  • Nile cruise: October to April. December and January are coolest; book luxury ships early. See our Nile cruises guide.
  • Pyramids of Giza: any time of year, but arrive at opening (usually 7–8am) in summer. Winter afternoons are lovely.
  • Abu Simbel: October to March; visit at dawn. The sun festivals are 22 February and 22 October.
  • Red Sea: April to November for warm water; winter is sunny but water drops to around 22°C and evenings are breezy.
  • Desert (Siwa, White Desert): October to April only; summer heat is extreme.
  • Alexandria: spring and autumn; winter brings occasional rain and rough seas.

What is the best time to visit Egypt for families, couples and photographers?

Families do best in the October and April school holidays or the cooler weeks of late December and January; couples and honeymooners have the most choice in November and March; photographers love the clear, low winter light from November to February.

  • Families: the Australian April and late-September to October school holidays line up well with Egypt's shoulder seasons. Children cope far better with 25–32°C than with 40°C, and pools on cruise ships and hotels stay pleasant. Avoid the heat of the July holidays unless the trip is mostly beach. See Egypt with kids.
  • Honeymooners and couples: November and March combine warm days, comfortable dawn balloon flights and Red Sea water still warm enough to swim. Many Australian couples marry in spring or autumn, and a November honeymoon is close to ideal. See the Egypt honeymoon.
  • Photographers: winter brings low sun angles, golden light from about 4pm, and generally clear skies, though Cairo haze can soften views of the pyramids. Spring dust storms reduce visibility for a day or two at a time.
  • Older travellers: December to February is the most comfortable for walking around large sites like Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, provided you are ready for crowds.
  • Divers and snorkellers: June to November, when Red Sea water is warmest and visibility excellent.

Which festivals and events should I plan around?

The events that most affect an Egypt trip are Ramadan and the two Eid holidays, Christmas and New Year, Easter, and the Abu Simbel sun festivals.

  • Christmas and New Year: the busiest weeks of the year for international visitors. Prices peak and New Year's Eve gala dinners on cruise ships and in hotels are often compulsory supplements.
  • Coptic Christmas (7 January): a public holiday, with services at churches in Coptic Cairo.
  • Eid al-Fitr: the festival at the end of Ramadan. Egyptians travel and holiday, so domestic flights, trains and Red Sea resorts are busy for several days.
  • Eid al-Adha: about ten weeks after Eid al-Fitr; again a peak domestic travel period, and some government offices close.
  • Sham el-Nessim: an ancient spring festival on the Monday after Coptic Easter, when families picnic in parks and along the Nile.
  • Abu Simbel sun festivals (22 February and 22 October): spectacular but crowded. Allow very early starts and expect road convoys from Aswan.

Islamic holiday dates follow the lunar calendar and shift earlier by about 11 days each year, so confirm exact dates closer to travel.

When should Australians book an Egypt trip?

For travel between December and February, book 9–12 months ahead; for shoulder season, 4–6 months is usually enough. Flights from Australia via the Gulf get expensive in the Christmas and school-holiday periods, and the best Nile ships sell out first.

Time differences matter for planning calls with home: Egypt observes daylight saving in its summer, so it is typically 9 hours behind Sydney and Melbourne in the Australian summer and 7 hours behind in the Australian winter. Perth is 5–6 hours ahead of Egypt. If you are flexible, travelling late October to late November gives you the best combination of weather, crowds and airfare. Not sure when? Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest time to visit Egypt?

June to August is the cheapest time, with lower hotel and cruise rates. It is very hot in the south, so plan early-morning sightseeing and consider adding the Red Sea.

Is January a good time to visit Egypt?

Yes. January is one of the best months for weather (around 19°C in Cairo and 23°C in Luxor) but one of the busiest, so book early and start sightseeing early.

Does it rain in Egypt?

Hardly ever. Cairo averages only a few rainy days a year, mostly in winter, and Luxor and Aswan are among the driest places on earth. Alexandria and the Mediterranean coast get some winter rain.

Is October too hot for Egypt?

Early October can still reach the mid-30s in Luxor and Aswan, but it cools steadily through the month. Late October is excellent.

What should I pack for Egypt in winter?

Layers. Days are warm, but mornings and evenings are cool, especially on deck or in the desert. Bring a fleece or light down jacket alongside sun protection. See what to wear in Egypt.

When is the Abu Simbel sun festival?

Around 22 February and 22 October each year, when sunrise lights up the statues in the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple. Expect large crowds.
