Quick answer
Auckland is New Zealand's gateway to Egypt: at the time of writing, Emirates flies non-stop to Dubai and Qatar Airways non-stop to Doha, each connecting to Cairo, for a total journey of roughly 24–28 hours. Noble Travel designs private Egypt tours for Aucklanders with flights, Egyptologist guides, a Nile cruise and 24/7 support.
How do you fly from Auckland to Egypt?
The simplest route is one stop: fly non-stop from Auckland to Dubai with Emirates or to Doha with Qatar Airways (about 16–18 hours), then connect to Cairo (about 3.5–4 hours). Allow roughly 24–28 hours in total, depending on the connection. These are among the longest flights in the world, so seat choice matters: if you're going to upgrade any part of the trip, make it this leg.
At the time of writing those are the only non-stop flights from Auckland to the Gulf, so they fill early in peak season. Alternatives are flying across the Tasman to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane and connecting to a Gulf carrier there, or routing via an Asian hub such as Singapore. Schedules change, so we compare the current options when we quote. See our flights guide.
Should you stop over on the way from Auckland?
For most Aucklanders, yes: a one or two-night stopover in Dubai or Doha turns a 24-hour-plus journey into two manageable halves and helps you adjust to a time zone 9–11 hours behind home. It's especially worthwhile on the way home, which is the leg that causes the worst jet lag.
In Dubai, think the old souks along the Creek and the desert at sunset; in Doha, the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif. The airlines often sell stopover hotel packages, and we can build the stopover into your itinerary.
Do Aucklanders need a visa for Egypt?
Yes. New Zealand passport holders need a visa for Egypt, which at the time of writing can be obtained online as an e-Visa before travel or as a visa on arrival. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Check visa2egypt.gov.eg and SafeTravel before you go. More detail is on our Egypt tours from New Zealand page.
When should Aucklanders travel to Egypt?
October to April is the best time to visit Egypt, with warm, dry days of roughly 20–30°C in Luxor and Aswan. That covers the New Zealand summer holidays, when fares out of Auckland are at their highest, so book 6–9 months ahead for December and January. Late October, November, February and March offer the best balance of weather, crowds and price. See the month-by-month guide.
Which Egypt tour suits a trip from Auckland?
Given the distance, we recommend at least 12 days on the ground. The Classic Egypt & Nile Cruise covers Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum, a 4-night Nile cruise and Abu Simbel. The Luxury Egypt journey suits a milestone trip, and the Egypt & Red Sea ends with beach days to recover before the long flight home. We plan by phone, video call, email and WhatsApp, only 2–3 hours behind Auckland. Request a free itinerary.
