Quick answer
From Hamilton and the Waikato, most travellers drive or take a shuttle to Auckland Airport (about 1.5 hours) and fly one-stop via Dubai or Doha to Cairo, roughly 26–30 hours door to door. Noble Travel designs private Egypt tours for Waikato travellers with flights, Egyptologist guides, a Nile cruise and 24/7 support.
How do you get from Hamilton to Egypt?
Hamilton Airport has no long-haul flights, so Waikato travellers usually drive, take a shuttle or a domestic connection to Auckland Airport and fly one-stop via Dubai or Doha to Cairo. At the time of writing, Emirates flies non-stop Auckland–Dubai and Qatar Airways non-stop Auckland–Doha. Including the trip to Auckland, allow roughly 26–30 hours door to door.
Many long-haul flights leave Auckland in the evening or late at night, so you can usually leave Hamilton the same day; if your flight is early, an airport hotel the night before takes the stress out of it. See Egypt tours from Auckland for more on the flights and stopovers.
The Nile for river lovers
If you know the Waikato River, you'll appreciate the Nile: a 3–4 night cruise between Luxor and Aswan is the heart of most Egypt trips, with temples at Edfu and Kom Ombo by day and the river sliding past at sunset. For a quieter, more intimate trip, a dahabiya, a traditional sailing boat with a handful of cabins, moors at islands and villages the big ships can't reach.
Compare the two in our Nile cruise vs dahabiya guide, or read the complete Nile cruise guide.
When should Waikato travellers go to Egypt?
October to April is the best time to visit Egypt, with warm, dry days of roughly 20–30°C in Luxor and Aswan. The New Zealand summer holidays bring the highest fares out of Auckland, so book 6–9 months ahead for December and January, or aim for late October, November, February or March. See the month-by-month guide.
