Essential Egypt in 8 Days: Cairo, Giza, Luxor & Aswan

A tightly planned private 8-day tour that covers Egypt's headline sights: the Giza pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, Luxor's temples and royal tombs, and Aswan with Abu Simbel. Domestic flights and road transfers are timed so you see the most with the least backtracking.

  • 8 days / 7 nights
  • Cairo → Giza → Luxor → Edfu → Kom Ombo → Aswan → Abu Simbel
  • Pace: Active

Eight days is the shortest trip we recommend for a first visit that goes beyond Cairo. By flying Cairo to Luxor (about an hour) and driving the scenic river road south to Aswan, you see the four sites most people come for: the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel, without the time a Nile cruise needs.

Every day runs with a private Egyptologist guide and a private air-conditioned vehicle, so you start early, beat the tour-bus crowds and stop when you want to. The Aswan to Cairo flight on the final day is timed to connect with evening departures to Australia via the Gulf, so you lose no sightseeing to the journey home.

This is a well-paced trip, not a slow one. If you would rather unpack once and float between temples, look at our 12-day Classic Egypt & Nile Cruise; if eight days is all you have, this is the most complete way to spend them.

Journey highlights

  • Private guided visit to the Great Pyramid, Khafre's pyramid and the Great Sphinx at opening time

  • Riverside drive from Luxor to Aswan with stops at Edfu and Kom Ombo temples

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day1

    Arrive in Cairo

Our representative meets you at Cairo International Airport before passport control and helps with your visa and luggage. A private transfer of 45–60 minutes takes you to your hotel near the pyramids. Most flights from Australia land in the afternoon or evening, so the rest of the day is yours to recover.

  2. Day2

Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Arrive at the Giza Plateau at opening time to see the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic viewpoint and the Great Sphinx before the heat and crowds build. After lunch, spend the afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum, two kilometres away, where your Egyptologist leads you up the Grand Staircase to the Tutankhamun galleries and the restored Solar Boat of Khufu.

  3. Day3

    Saqqara, Dahshur and Khan el-Khalili

Drive south about 45 minutes to Saqqara for the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2650 BC and the oldest large stone monument in Egypt, along with its painted Old Kingdom tombs. Continue to Dahshur, where you can climb down inside the Red Pyramid and photograph the Bent Pyramid with almost nobody else around. Finish with an evening walk through Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

  4. Day4

Fly to Luxor, Karnak and Luxor Temple

Take the roughly one-hour morning flight from Cairo to Luxor. After lunch, explore the Karnak temple complex, including the Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 columns. Visit Luxor Temple at dusk, when the floodlights come on and the Avenue of Sphinxes glows.

  5. Day5

Luxor West Bank: Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut

Cross to the West Bank early (an optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight can come first). Your standard ticket covers three royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and you can add Tutankhamun's or Seti I's tomb on separate tickets. Continue to the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon.

  6. Day6

Drive to Aswan via Edfu and Kom Ombo

Follow the Nile south by private car, about 3.5 hours of driving in total. Stop at Edfu, the best-preserved temple in Egypt, dedicated to Horus, and then Kom Ombo, the double temple of Sobek and Haroeris on a bend in the river with its small Crocodile Museum next door. Arrive in Aswan in the late afternoon.

  7. Day7

Abu Simbel and a sunset felucca

Leave around 4–5am for the roughly three-hour desert drive to Abu Simbel (or upgrade to the 45-minute flight). Your guide explains how the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Nefertari were cut into blocks and moved uphill in the 1960s to escape Lake Nasser. Back in Aswan by early afternoon, sail on a traditional felucca around Elephantine Island and past the Botanical Garden at sunset.

  8. Day8

Philae Temple, fly to Cairo and depart

Take a short motorboat ride to Philae, the island Temple of Isis, then stop at the Aswan High Dam. Fly Aswan to Cairo (about 1 hour 20 minutes) and connect to your international flight home, or add extra nights in Cairo or on the Red Sea.

Essential Egypt in 8 Days: Cairo, Giza, Luxor & Aswan: FAQs

Is 8 days enough to see Egypt?

Yes, for the main highlights. Eight days lets you see Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Saqqara, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel at a brisk but manageable pace. If you want a Nile cruise as well, allow 11–12 days. Our Egypt itinerary guide compares the options.

Why is there no Nile cruise on this tour?

A Luxor–Aswan cruise takes three or four nights on fixed sailing days, which is hard to fit into eight days. Driving between Luxor and Aswan still gets you to Edfu and Kom Ombo, the two main temples the cruise ships stop at. See our 12-day Classic Egypt & Nile Cruise if you would like to sail.

Should I drive or fly to Abu Simbel?

The road trip is about three hours each way through the desert and leaves before dawn. The flight from Aswan takes about 45 minutes and gives you a lie-in, but costs more and depends on the schedule. Both options are covered in our Abu Simbel guide.

Can I go inside the Great Pyramid?

Yes, with a separate ticket bought on site, subject to daily availability. The passage is steep, narrow and humid, so skip it if you are claustrophobic. The Red Pyramid at Dahshur, which you visit on Day 3, is an easier and quieter alternative. Our Pyramids of Giza guide has more detail.

Can this itinerary be changed?

Yes. Every Noble Travel tour is private and tailor-made, so we can change hotels, add nights or attach a Red Sea or Cairo extension. Tell us your dates on our plan my trip form.
