The Red Sea is Egypt’s reward for all that early rising. After Cairo and the Nile, a few days at Hurghada, El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Marsa Alam or in Sinai give you warm water, coral reefs a short boat ride away, and nothing more demanding than choosing between the pool and the beach.
It also balances the seasons. In summer, when Luxor is too hot for long touring days, the coast is at its best and the sea reaches its warmest; in winter the water is cooler but the sunshine is reliable. Domestic flights link the coast with Cairo, so the beach slots neatly at the end of a trip before you fly home.

Egypt and Red Sea holidays: FAQs
Where is the best place to stay on the Red Sea?
It depends on what you want: El Gouna for a lively, walkable resort town, Sahl Hasheesh or Soma Bay for quiet luxury, Marsa Alam for wilder reefs and dolphins, and Dahab or Sharm el-Sheikh in Sinai. Our where to stay on the Red Sea guide compares them.
How many days should I spend on the Red Sea?
Three or four nights is enough to relax and fit in a snorkelling trip; a week suits divers and anyone who wants a proper beach holiday.
Is the Red Sea warm enough to swim in winter?
Yes. The water stays above 20°C all year, at about 21–22°C from January to March and up to 28°C in August and September. See Egypt weather by month.
How do I get from the Nile to the Red Sea?
Usually by a short domestic flight to Hurghada or Marsa Alam, or by private car from Luxor to the coast, which takes several hours. We choose whichever suits your route.
