Egypt weather: FAQs

What is the best month to visit Egypt?

For sightseeing along the Nile, January, February, March, November and December are ideal, with warm, dry days and cool nights. November and March are the sweet spots: excellent weather with fewer crowds than Christmas and January. See our best time to visit Egypt guide.

How hot does Egypt get in summer?

From June to August, Luxor and Aswan typically reach 41–42°C by day, and Cairo about 35°C. Sightseeing is still possible at dawn, but most travellers from Australia and New Zealand find October to April far more comfortable.

Does it rain in Egypt?

Hardly ever in the south: Luxor and Aswan can go years without meaningful rain. Cairo sees a handful of showery days in winter, and Alexandria on the Mediterranean is the wettest city, with most of its rain between November and February.

When is the Red Sea warm enough for swimming?

The water stays above 20°C all year, ranging from about 21°C in February to 28°C in August and September. From April to November it’s comfortable for long swims and snorkelling; in winter many divers wear a thicker wetsuit.

Is Egypt cold in winter?

Days are mild to warm (about 19°C in Cairo and 23–24°C in Luxor in January), but nights in the desert drop to single figures. Bring a warm jacket for sunrise starts, hot-air balloon flights and evenings on the Nile.
