Egypt in May: Shoulder-Season Value, Building Heat and the Red Sea

Quick answer

May is Egypt's value month: crowds drop and prices ease, but Luxor and Aswan approach 40°C, so sightseeing becomes an early-morning affair. Cairo sits around 32°C and the Red Sea is at its best, with water near 25°C. In 2027 May is also crowded with holidays: Coptic Easter (2 May), Sham el-Nessim (3 May) and Eid al-Adha, expected around 16 May.

Is May a good time to visit Egypt?

May is a good month if you are happy to start at 6am and build in a beach; it is a poor month if you want long, leisurely days at the temples. The weather is reliably clear, prices are lower than in the winter peak, and you share the sites with far fewer people. The cost is heat: Luxor and Aswan regularly reach 39–40°C, and the khamsin can still deliver a 44°C dust day.

Our best time to visit Egypt guide calls May hot with early starts essential. That is fair, and the answer is to design the trip around the heat rather than just endure it.

Who does May suit, and who should choose another month?

May suits flexible, heat-tolerant travellers who want value and quiet sites; it does not suit anyone planning desert camping, long walking days or travel with very young children or elderly relatives who struggle in heat.

Good fit

  • Couples and friends happy to sightsee from 6 to 11am, then retreat to the pool.
  • Anyone combining the Nile with a week of snorkelling or diving.
  • Repeat visitors who want the Valley of the Kings or Karnak without the winter crowds.
  • Travellers using frequent-flyer points or end-of-financial-year leave from Australia.

Choose another month

  • White Desert, Bahariya and Siwa trips: the open desert is already too hot.
  • Dahabiya sailing: some boats finish their season during May, and those that sail have no air-conditioned lounges on the open deck.
  • Travellers with heart or respiratory conditions who are sensitive to heat; check with your doctor and read our heat and sun safety guide.

What is the weather like in May, region by region?

May is hot and dry everywhere except the coasts, where sea breezes take the edge off.

  • Cairo and Giza: about 32°C by day, 18°C at night. Mornings at the pyramids are comfortable until about 10am; the Grand Egyptian Museum is the place to be after that.
  • Luxor: 39–40°C highs, 21°C lows. Shade is scarce on the West Bank.
  • Aswan: 40–41°C highs with very low humidity; evenings by the river are lovely.
  • Red Sea (Hurghada, El Gouna, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam): about 31°C air, water around 25°C and warming, and steady northerly winds that keep the beach bearable.
  • Alexandria and the north coast: about 27°C, often the most comfortable city in Egypt this month.

Days are long: with daylight saving in force, Cairo's sun sets after 7.30pm, giving you a useful evening window for open-air sites such as Luxor Temple.

Which holidays fall in May 2027?

May 2027 has an unusual cluster: Labour Day on 1 May, Coptic Easter on 2 May, Sham el-Nessim on Monday 3 May, and Eid al-Adha, expected around 16 May (with the Day of Arafat around 15 May). Eid dates depend on the sighting of the moon and are confirmed only shortly before.

  • First weekend: with three holidays in three days, expect a long weekend of domestic travel: picnics on the Nile, busy feluccas, crowded Alexandria and a rush to the Red Sea. See Sham el-Nessim.
  • Eid al-Adha: the Feast of the Sacrifice is Egypt's biggest domestic holiday, usually around four days of public holiday. Families travel, Red Sea and north coast hotels fill and raise their rates, and trains and domestic flights are heavily booked. On the morning of Eid, livestock is slaughtered in some streets and courtyards, which can be confronting; your guide can steer you away from it. Read our Eid in Egypt guide for more.

Sights stay open over all of these holidays but are busy with Egyptian families. Outside them, May is one of the quietest months at the big monuments.

How should you shape a May itinerary?

Put the Nile at the start of your trip and the sea at the end, keep the Upper Egypt section to four or five days, and fly rather than drive long distances. A May trip of about 12 days might look like this:

  1. Days 1–3, Cairo: Giza and Saqqara at opening time on one morning, the Grand Egyptian Museum through the heat of another afternoon, Islamic Cairo in the evening.
  2. Days 4–7, Nile cruise Luxor to Aswan: four nights on an air-conditioned ship. Excursions run at dawn and late afternoon; the hottest hours are spent sailing past the river banks with the pool on deck.
  3. Day 8, Abu Simbel: a 4am departure gets you there before the heat, or fly from Aswan.
  4. Days 9–12, Red Sea: fly to Hurghada via Cairo, or stay in Upper Egypt and drive from Luxor to the coast (about 4 hours), then snorkel, dive or do nothing.

This is close to our Egypt and Red Sea itinerary, which can be tailored to May timings.

Why is May so good for the Red Sea?

In May the Red Sea is at its best balance: water around 25°C, air around 31°C, long sunny days and fewer families than in the July and August peak.

Snorkellers can usually manage without a wetsuit by late May, and visibility on the reefs off Hurghada, El Gouna and Ras Mohammed is excellent. Further south, Marsa Alam is quieter still, with house reefs where green turtles feed on the seagrass and a resident dugong population in some bays (sightings are never guaranteed). Northerly winds keep kitesurfing good in El Gouna and Soma Bay. The exception is the Eid al-Adha week, when Egyptian families fill the resorts.

What should you pack and wear in May?

Dress for desert heat rather than beach heat: loose, light-coloured long sleeves and trousers keep you cooler and more comfortable than shorts and singlets in 40°C sun.

  • Linen or cotton shirts and trousers, and a wide-brimmed hat that ties on for felucca and balloon rides.
  • Polarised sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen; the glare off pale sandstone at Karnak and Hatshepsut's temple is intense.
  • Electrolyte sachets to add to bottled water, and a small insulated bottle that keeps water cold through a morning on the West Bank.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest for snorkelling, which also protect against sunburn on long swims.
  • One light layer for over-air-conditioned buses, museums and cruise dining rooms.

Women may find a large cotton scarf useful for shade as well as for covering shoulders in mosques. A light cardigan or shawl also covers you in churches during the Coptic Easter week.

Is Egypt cheaper in May?

Generally yes: May is shoulder-to-low season, and Nile ships and Upper Egypt hotels usually price below their winter rates, although holiday weeks on the coast are the exception. We don't publish package prices here, as they depend on dates and ships, but the savings tend to show most on cruises and on luxury hotels in Luxor and Aswan.

Flights from Australia are usually reasonable in May, before the June and July school-holiday demand. What does not get cheaper: entry tickets to the sites, which are fixed by the government, and Red Sea hotels over Eid al-Adha. For a full breakdown of where the money goes, see the cost of an Egypt trip from Australia.

Frequently asked questions

How hot is Egypt in May?

Cairo is around 32°C, Luxor and Aswan 39–40°C and the Red Sea about 31°C with water near 25°C. Khamsin days can be hotter still.

Is May a good time for a Nile cruise?

Yes, if you choose an air-conditioned ship and accept dawn and late-afternoon excursions. Prices are usually lower and sites quieter than in winter.

When is Eid al-Adha in 2027?

Eid al-Adha 2027 is expected around 16 May, depending on the moon sighting. It is a multi-day public holiday when domestic travel peaks.

Is May good for snorkelling in the Red Sea?

Very good. The water is about 25°C and warming, visibility is excellent and it is quieter than the summer holidays.

Can you visit the White Desert in May?

We don't recommend it. Daytime temperatures in the open desert are already uncomfortably high; October to March is the season.
