Quick answer
September is Egypt's turning point: Luxor and Aswan ease from around 39°C to the mid-30s by the end of the month, Cairo sits near 33°C and the Red Sea is still about 28°C. Prices remain below peak and crowds are light, which makes late September a smart choice for Australians on the spring school holidays.
Is September a good month to visit Egypt?
September is a good month for Egypt if you can travel in its second half, when the heat in the south starts to break but high-season prices and crowds haven't arrived. The first week still feels like summer; the last week often feels like early October.
It's a month for people who want the big sights without the winter queues: Abu Simbel, the Valley of the Kings and the Giza plateau are noticeably quieter than they will be from mid-October. Hotels and cruises generally still charge low- or shoulder-season rates, though Nile prices start climbing for the very last days of the month. For how September sits within the whole year, see the best time to visit Egypt.
How does the weather change from early to late September?
Over September, Luxor's average high drops by roughly four or five degrees, from the high 30s to the mid-30s, and nights begin to cool enough to sit outdoors comfortably. The table shows the typical progression.
| Place | Early September | Late September | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo | 34°C / 22°C | 32°C / 20°C | Humidity falls; evenings pleasant |
| Luxor | 39°C / 23°C | 35–36°C / 21°C | Mornings comfortable until about 10am |
| Aswan | 40°C / 25°C | 37°C / 22°C | Still the hottest stop |
| Hurghada | 34°C / 26°C | 32°C / 24°C | Sea around 28°C all month |
| Alexandria | 31°C / 23°C | 29°C / 21°C | Summer crowds thin after the first week or two |
Figures are typical averages rounded to the nearest degree; a late heatwave can bring 40°C back to Aswan at any point. Sunrise is around 6.30am and sunset around 7pm (Egypt was on summer time in recent years; check the clocks when you travel), so you still get long, usable mornings.
Does Egypt suit the NSW and Victorian spring school holidays?
Yes: the spring school break, which in Victoria and New South Wales usually covers the last week or two of September and in some years runs into early October, lines up with the start of Egypt's comfortable season. Other states and New Zealand have holidays in roughly the same window. Dates shift each year, so check your state's calendar.
With about two weeks, you can do an 11- or 12-day trip and still have a day to recover before school. Two shapes work well:
- Classic first trip: Cairo and the Grand Egyptian Museum, a four-night Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan, and Abu Simbel. Our Classic Egypt and Nile Cruise fits a two-week window neatly.
- Family mix: a shorter Nile section with a felucca and a Nubian village visit, then three or four nights snorkelling on the Red Sea, the pattern of our Egypt family adventure.
Flights out of Australia fill quickly over school holidays, so book them first, ideally three to five months ahead. More on fitting Egypt around school terms is in Egypt in Australian school holidays.
Is September a good time for a Nile cruise?
Late September is a good time for a Nile cruise: the boats are running their full programmes again, decks are pleasant at sunrise and sunset, and cabins are easier to secure than in October or November.
Excursions still start early, often at 6am or 7am, so you are back on board before the strongest sun. Midday sailing is the time for a long lunch and a swim in the deck pool. Some dahabiyas restart their season around the end of September or early October, so if you want a sailing boat specifically, check its first departure date; see Nile cruise vs dahabiya for which suits you.
Early September cruises are fine for heat-tolerant travellers and often cheaper, but Aswan at 40°C is a real test, especially if you add the 280-kilometre road trip to Abu Simbel.
Is the Red Sea still warm in September?
September is one of the best months of the year for the Red Sea, with water still around 28°C and air temperatures easing into the low 30s. Egyptian summer crowds drift away once schools return, which in recent years has been from late September or October.
Visibility on the reefs is usually excellent, and the afternoon wind that suits kitesurfers in El Gouna and Soma Bay stays fairly consistent. For divers it is prime time for the northern wrecks and the offshore reefs. A three- or four-night beach finish after the Nile is easy to arrange: Hurghada is about four hours by road from Luxor, or a short flight from Cairo.
Is September cheaper than October?
Usually, yes: most Nile Valley hotels and cruise ships price September as low or shoulder season, and the step up to high-season rates tends to come during October, so the same itinerary can cost noticeably less a few weeks earlier. How much less depends on the boat and hotel, so compare quotes for both months.
The difference is largest on luxury stays, where peak and off-peak rates are furthest apart, and on Nile cruises, where low-season availability also means a better choice of cabins. Flights work differently: fares from Australia follow our school holidays rather than Egypt's seasons, so a departure in the spring break costs more than the same flight a week either side of it.
Value also comes from space. In September you can often visit the Tomb of Seti I or Nefertari's tomb in the Valley of the Queens with only a handful of others (both need an extra ticket, and both were open at the time of writing), stand almost alone in Karnak's Great Hypostyle Hall at 7am, and see Abu Simbel without the winter queues.
What's happening in Egypt in September?
September has no major national holidays in 2026 or 2027, but it does bring the Coptic New Year, Nayrouz, on 11 September, and the gentle end of the Egyptian summer.
- Nayrouz (11 September, or 12 September in some years): the start of the Coptic year, which traces its calendar back to the ancient Egyptian civil calendar. It is a church festival rather than a public holiday, and the traditional fruit is red dates and guava. Coptic Cairo's churches are busy around this time.
- Back to school: Egyptian schools and universities usually go back in late September or October, so the North Coast and Alexandria empty out quickly and city traffic picks up.
- Harvest season: dates are harvested across the Nile Valley and the oases from late summer; you will see palms heavy with red and yellow fruit on the drive along the river.
Ramadan and the two Eids fall in the first half of the year in 2026 and 2027, so September travel is not affected; the dates are in travelling Egypt during Ramadan.
What should you book for September?
For late-September travel, book flights and a cabin on your preferred Nile ship four to five months ahead; Red Sea hotels and Cairo stays can be left a little later.
- Hold off on desert trips: the White Desert and Siwa are still very hot, and most camping operators restart in October.
- Prioritise accommodation with a pool in Luxor and Aswan; you will use it every afternoon.
- Pack for heat but add one light layer for air-conditioned buses, museums and early balloon flights.
If you can push your dates back by just a fortnight, see Egypt in October for what changes as the season opens.
