Quick answer
November is arguably the best all-round month for Egypt: Cairo is around 25°C, Luxor and Aswan about 29–30°C, the Red Sea still about 25°C, and prices sit below the Christmas peak. It is the heart of the Nile cruise and dahabiya season, and from 2026 it also marks the anniversary of the Grand Egyptian Museum's full opening on 1 November 2025.
Why is November such a good month for Egypt?
November is the one month when almost everything in Egypt is in season at once: the Nile Valley is warm rather than hot, the Red Sea is still warm enough to swim, the deserts are open, and Christmas crowds and prices haven't arrived.
You can walk Karnak at midday without wilting, sit on a cruise deck in the evening in a light jumper, and snorkel off Hurghada a few days later. The trade-off is that the travel industry knows it: November is firmly high season, and the best cabins and hotels are booked by people who planned early. For the year-round picture, see the best time to visit Egypt.
The light is another reason to choose November. With the sun lower in the sky, carved reliefs at Karnak, Edfu and Kom Ombo show deeper shadows and finer detail, and the warm golden hour starts from about 4pm. Rain is rare: Cairo may have a showery day or two, and only Alexandria sees the first proper winter storms. For photographers, couples and anyone who wants to walk a lot, it is hard to beat.
November, October or December: which is better?
November beats late October for comfort and December for value and crowds; it only loses if you need very warm sea water or the festive atmosphere of Christmas.
| Late October | November | December | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxor daytime high | 32°C | 29–30°C | 24–25°C |
| Luxor night | 17°C | 13–15°C | 8–10°C |
| Red Sea water | 26–27°C | 24–26°C | 22–23°C |
| Crowds | Building | Steady, manageable | Peak from mid-month |
| Prices | Shoulder to high | High | Highest over Christmas and New Year |
| Sunset (Cairo) | About 6pm, then about 5pm once clocks go back | About 5pm | Just before 5pm |
The one adjustment November asks of you is the short afternoon. With sunset around 5pm and many sites closing late in the afternoon, plan the big visits for the morning, and use the evenings for Luxor Temple under lights, a felucca at dusk or dinner in Islamic Cairo.
What's it like visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum in November?
The Grand Egyptian Museum opened in full on 1 November 2025, so November 2026 marks its first anniversary; it is the essential first stop of any Cairo stay and, in November, a pleasant 15-minute drive from a morning at the pyramids.
The complete Tutankhamun collection, more than 5,000 objects shown together for the first time, and the restored Solar Boat of Khufu are the headline galleries, but the Grand Staircase lined with royal statues and the colossal Ramesses II in the atrium are just as memorable. Allow at least half a day. Any anniversary programme or special events would be announced by the museum closer to the date, and early November visits may be busier than usual, so pre-book tickets and arrive at opening time.
A good November Cairo day: Giza plateau at 8am in 20°C sunshine, the GEM from late morning, and an evening drive back past the floodlit plateau. Our Grand Egyptian Museum guide has a gallery-by-gallery plan.
Is November the best month for a Nile cruise or dahabiya?
November is one of the two or three best months for any Nile journey: every cruise ship, dahabiya and Lake Nasser vessel is operating, the light is soft and sightseeing is comfortable all morning.
- Cruise ships run three-, four- and seven-night itineraries between Luxor and Aswan; four nights is the most popular. See our Nile cruises guide.
- Dahabiyas sail Esna to Aswan in five or so nights, stopping at small sites such as Gebel el-Silsila and El Kab that big ships skip. Mild November evenings are ideal for dinner on an open deck.
- Lake Nasser cruises between Aswan and Abu Simbel take three or four nights and visit the rescued Nubian temples, with the bonus of seeing Abu Simbel floodlit at night. Only a handful of ships sail the lake and departures are less frequent than on the main Nile, so book these first.
Pack a fleece: sailing on the Nile at 7am in November can feel cool, and dawn balloon flights over Luxor are noticeably chilly.
What's on in Egypt in November?
November has no national public holidays, but it brings the Cairo International Film Festival, the start of the Coptic Nativity Fast, and the beginning of the desert and stargazing season.
- Cairo International Film Festival: one of the oldest film festivals in the region, usually held over about ten days in November at the Cairo Opera House in Zamalek. Many screenings are open to the public; check this year's dates and programme.
- Coptic Nativity Fast: from 25 November, many Coptic Christians begin 43 days of fasting before Coptic Christmas on 7 January, avoiding meat and dairy. Vegan Egyptian staples such as koshari and ful are everywhere.
- Desert season: White Desert camps and Siwa are now at their best, with days in the mid-20s and nights around 10°C. Moonless November nights there are superb for stargazing.
Ramadan and the Eids fall earlier in the year in 2026 and 2027, so November is unaffected.
How can you add the desert or the Red Sea to a November trip?
November is the easiest month to combine the Nile with either the Western Desert or the Red Sea, because both are comfortable at the same time as Luxor and Aswan.
For the desert, the classic add-on is two or three days from Cairo: drive about four and a half to five hours south-west to Bahariya Oasis, cross the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain, and camp overnight among the chalk formations of the White Desert. Days are in the mid-20s, and nights around 10°C or a little lower call for a good sleeping bag. Siwa, roughly nine to ten hours' drive from Cairo, rewards at least three nights.
For the sea, drive about four hours from Luxor to Hurghada or El Gouna, or fly via Cairo, and spend three or four nights snorkelling or diving. Water in the mid-20s is comfortable for an hour's snorkel in a rash vest. Marsa Alam, about three and a half hours south of Hurghada, is a degree or so warmer and much quieter. The Egypt and Red Sea 14-day journey shows how the pieces fit together.
How far ahead should you book a November trip?
Book six to nine months ahead for November: flights from Australia are reasonable outside school holidays, but the best Nile ships, dahabiyas and historic hotels fill early.
- Your Nile boat first, since good cabins on smaller ships and dahabiyas are limited.
- Signature hotels, such as a pyramid-view room in Giza or a Nile-view room at the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract in Aswan.
- Flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide via the Gulf; November sits outside Australian school holidays, so fares are often moderate.
- Extras such as a private Egyptologist at the GEM, a balloon flight or a night in the White Desert.
