Planning a Honeymoon in Egypt: When to Go, How Long and Where to Stay

Quick answer

An Egypt honeymoon works best at 12 to 16 days, from late October to early April, built around historic hotels or a small Nile boat with mornings for sightseeing and afternoons left free, and three or four nights on the Red Sea at the end. For a spring or autumn wedding the timing is ideal; book flights and hotels in the names on your passports.

Is Egypt a good choice for a honeymoon?

Egypt is an outstanding honeymoon for couples who want a trip with a story, not just a sunbed: the pyramids and Luxor's tombs by day, grand hotels and the Nile by evening, and the Red Sea to finish. It is a less obvious choice if you both want a fortnight of pure rest, because even a slow Egypt itinerary involves early starts and plenty of walking.

The secret is pacing. A honeymoon in Egypt should do less than a first-timer's tour, with sightseeing finished by lunch, afternoons by the river or the pool, and moments built in for just the two of you. This guide covers how to plan one; our Egypt honeymoon journey is one ready-made version, with Mena House, the Old Cataract, a balloon flight and the Red Sea, which we adjust for each couple.

When should you go, given your wedding date?

If you marry in spring or autumn, Egypt's best months fall straight after the wedding; summer weddings mean peak-season Egypt, and winter weddings mean summer heat, so consider waiting a few months.

  • Spring wedding (September to November): late October and November are close to perfect: Luxor around 30°C, the Red Sea still 24–27°C and prices below the Christmas peak.
  • Summer wedding (December to February): ideal sightseeing weather, the busiest weeks of the year and the highest rates. Avoid the fortnight from about 20 December, and book 9–12 months ahead.
  • Autumn wedding (March to May): March and early April are excellent; by May Luxor is near 40°C, so lean the trip towards Cairo and the coast.
  • Winter wedding (June to August): Luxor and Aswan pass 40°C. A short break now and Egypt in October or November is often the better plan.

Check whether Ramadan falls in your dates: in 2027 it is expected from about 8 February to 9 March. Sights and hotels operate normally, and alcohol is generally still served to foreign guests in tourist hotels, but days are quieter. The best time to visit Egypt guide has the month-by-month picture.

How long should an Egypt honeymoon be?

Twelve to sixteen days in Egypt is the sweet spot for a honeymoon: long enough for the classic sights at an unhurried pace plus a proper beach finish. From Australia, add about two days of travel.

Length in EgyptWhat fitsHow it feels
10 daysCairo, Aswan, Luxor, two nights at the beachRomantic but busy; little slack
12–14 daysCairo, a cruise or Aswan and Luxor hotels, Abu Simbel, three nights at the beachThe ideal balance
16 days or moreAdds a dahabiya, a night in the desert, Siwa or extra beach timeUnhurried; afternoons free most days

A night or two in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi on the way out is worth considering, as it breaks the long flight and you arrive in Cairo rested rather than jet-lagged. If you have more time, Egypt also pairs well with Jordan, about an hour and a half's flight from Cairo, for Petra and a night in a Wadi Rum desert camp.

Nile cruise, dahabiya or hotels?

For most honeymooners a dahabiya or a stay in Aswan's and Luxor's historic hotels is more romantic than a large cruise ship, while a small luxury ship is the middle ground.

  • Dahabiya: a traditional two-masted sailing boat with only about 4–12 cabins, sailing between Esna and Aswan over four or five nights. You moor at islands and small temples, eat on deck and often have the sites to yourselves. It is the most romantic way to see the Nile.
  • Small luxury ship: more space, a pool and spa, and suites with balconies on the best vessels, but set excursion times and more fellow guests.
  • Land-based: three nights at the Old Cataract in Aswan and two or three at the Winter Palace in Luxor, linked by a private drive via Kom Ombo and Edfu. You control the timing completely and add a private felucca for the river.

Which hotels are worth the splurge?

Spend where the setting is the point: a pyramid-view room at Giza, a Nile-view room in Aswan, and a beach resort with a good house reef. Egypt's grand hotels carry over a century of history, and staying in them is part of the experience rather than a base.

  • Marriott Mena House, Giza: a former royal hunting lodge at the foot of the pyramids. Request a pyramid-view room; the view at breakfast is the honeymoon photograph.
  • Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, Aswan: the 1899 palace on a granite bluff above the First Cataract, with a terrace made for sunset drinks over the islands.
  • Sofitel Winter Palace, Luxor: a Victorian-era hotel on the corniche with formal gardens, a short walk from Luxor Temple.
  • The Red Sea: the all-suite resorts of Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay suit couples who want quiet and a reef from the jetty; El Gouna suits couples who want restaurants and a bit of life.
  • Something different: Adrère Amellal in Siwa, an eco-lodge lit by candles and oil lamps rather than electricity, for couples adding the Western Desert.

Our historic hotels of Egypt guide has more. Room categories and availability change, so confirm views in writing when you book.

What romantic experiences should you build in?

Plan one moment a day that is just for the two of you, and book the ones that depend on weather or availability in advance.

  • A dawn balloon flight over Luxor's West Bank: about 40–60 minutes above Hatshepsut's temple and the green fields; keep a spare morning in case the wind grounds flights. See the Luxor hot-air balloon guide.
  • A private felucca at sunset in Aswan, past Elephantine and Kitchener's Island, with a picnic on board.
  • Abu Simbel by air, which saves a 4am start and a round trip of about seven hours by road.
  • A night in the desert: a camp in the White Desert, where the sky is dark enough for the Milky Way; cold from November to February.
  • A private dinner: on a dahabiya deck, in a hotel garden or on the beach; ask early, as the best spots go first.

Tell every hotel you are on your honeymoon when you book. Many offer a cake, flowers or an upgrade where available, though none is guaranteed.

What practical points should newlyweds know?

The most common honeymoon problem is paperwork: your flight tickets, visas and hotel bookings must match the name in each passport, which may still be your pre-wedding name. If you plan to change your name, travel on your current passport and book in that name, and update the passport after you return.

  • Affection in public: holding hands is fine, but kissing and cuddling in the street draws attention outside hotels and resorts.
  • Same-sex couples: read Smartraveller's Egypt advice on LGBTI travellers before you book; discretion in public is strongly advised.
  • Travel insurance: buy it when you pay the deposit, so cancellation cover starts straight away.
  • Dress: loose clothes covering shoulders and knees for sightseeing; save beachwear for the Red Sea and hotel pools.
  • Don't overplan: after the wedding, you will both be tired. Keep the first day in Cairo free.

Frequently asked questions

Is Egypt a good honeymoon destination?

Yes for couples who enjoy history and culture as well as romance. Combine the great sites with historic hotels, a small Nile boat and a few nights on the Red Sea, and keep the pace slower than a standard tour.

What is the best month for an Egypt honeymoon?

Late October, November, March and early April: warm days, cool nights, a swimmable Red Sea and fewer crowds than the December to February peak.

How much does an Egypt honeymoon cost?

It depends mostly on hotels, the Nile boat and flights. Our cost of an Egypt trip guide gives indicative ranges, and we quote each private honeymoon individually.

Is Egypt safe for honeymooners?

The main tourist areas are visited safely by large numbers of couples every year. Check Smartraveller's current advice before booking and again before you fly, and travel with a private guide and driver for the smoothest experience.

Can we combine an Egypt honeymoon with a beach?

Yes. The Red Sea coast is about four hours by road from Luxor, and three or four nights at a resort with a house reef is the classic finish.
