Quick answer
Sphinx International Airport (SPX) is a small, newer airport west of Giza, about 30–40 minutes by road from the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. It handles far fewer flights than Cairo International and has no long-haul connections from Australia, so most Australians will land at Cairo; SPX makes sense only when a regional or low-cost flight you already want happens to use it.
Where is Sphinx International Airport?
Sphinx International sits in the desert west of Giza, close to the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, which makes it the nearest commercial airport to the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. It opened to passenger flights only around 2019–2020 and is a fraction of the size of Cairo International.
The location is the whole point. Cairo International is on the far side of the capital, so arriving there and heading for a Giza hotel means crossing the city. From Sphinx, the drive to the Giza Plateau or the GEM's main entrance is typically 30–40 minutes on desert highways with relatively little traffic. Hotels in the pyramids area, such as Marriott Mena House and Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo, are on that side of the city.
The flip side is that Sphinx is a long way from everything else. Downtown, Zamalek and Islamic Cairo are 60–90 minutes away, and Heliopolis or New Cairo can take two hours. Our where to stay in Cairo guide explains which neighbourhoods suit which kind of trip.
Which airlines fly to Sphinx International Airport?
At the time of writing, SPX is served by a short and frequently changing list of regional and low-cost carriers plus some EgyptAir services; there are no flights from Australia and no long-haul network.
Since it opened, airlines have added and dropped Sphinx routes every few seasons, and Egypt has been expanding the terminal as visitor numbers to the Grand Egyptian Museum grow. Rather than rely on a list that will date quickly, search your preferred route with SPX as the destination in a flight-comparison tool, then confirm on the airline's own site.
For travellers from Australia and New Zealand, the realistic ways SPX appears in a trip are:
- A low-cost hop from the Gulf or Europe on a separate ticket after a long-haul flight to that hub. This can work for a stopover itinerary, but separate tickets carry real risk: if your first flight is late, the second airline has no obligation to rebook you.
- A domestic flight to or from a Red Sea or Nile city, if one is scheduled when you travel.
- A side trip, for example Cairo as a few days added to a Europe holiday, where a direct European low-cost flight to Sphinx lands you close to the pyramids.
For full-service, through-ticketed journeys from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, read our flights from Australia to Egypt guide: almost all of them land at Cairo International.
Should you fly into Sphinx or Cairo International?
Choose Cairo International for long-haul connections and onward domestic flights; choose Sphinx only if your flight is already there and you are staying near the pyramids.
| Sphinx International (SPX) | Cairo International (CAI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance to Giza Pyramids and GEM | About 30–40 minutes | About 45–90 minutes |
| Distance to downtown and Zamalek | About 60–90 minutes | About 35–60 minutes |
| Flights from Australia via the Gulf | None through-ticketed at the time of writing | Daily on several carriers |
| Domestic connections | Limited and changeable | Frequent EgyptAir flights to Luxor, Aswan and the coast |
| Arrival queues | Usually short | Can be long at peak times |
| Facilities | Compact: a few cafés and shops | Full range, lounges, airport hotel |
One handy combination: arrive at Cairo International, spend your first nights in the city, then finish your Cairo stay in Giza and leave from Sphinx if a suitable onward flight exists. That avoids a cross-city drive on your last morning.
What is arriving at Sphinx airport like?
Arrival is quick and low-key compared with Cairo: one terminal, short walks and usually short queues, but fewer services in the arrivals hall.
- Visa: arrive with an approved e-Visa from the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg. A small airport may not offer the same visa-on-arrival service hours as Cairo, and an e-Visa removes the uncertainty. Our Egypt visa guide explains the process.
- Money: there are ATMs and exchange facilities, but fewer of them. Carry a small amount of US dollars or Egyptian pounds in case a machine is out of service.
- SIM card: mobile network counters may not be staffed for every flight. Setting up an eSIM before you leave Australia is the safest plan; see our SIM and eSIM guide.
- Customs: the same Egyptian rules apply as at Cairo, including the requirement for prior approval for drones.
How do you get from Sphinx airport to your hotel?
Book a private transfer or use a ride-hailing app; there is no useful public transport, and taxis waiting at the kerb are fewer than at Cairo.
| From Sphinx airport to | Typical drive |
|---|---|
| Grand Egyptian Museum | 30–40 minutes |
| Giza Pyramids area hotels | 30–45 minutes |
| Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October City | 15–30 minutes |
| Zamalek, downtown, Garden City | 60–90 minutes |
| Heliopolis and New Cairo | 90–120 minutes |
| Alexandria | About 2.5–3 hours |
Uber and similar apps work in this part of greater Cairo, but drivers may take a while to reach the airport. With a late-night arrival, luggage for a two-week trip or children in tow, a pre-booked driver is worth it. On our tours, transfers are matched to your flight whichever airport you use, and our 4-day Cairo and Pyramids stopover can start from either.
Does Sphinx airport suit a short Cairo stopover?
It can, if your flights happen to use it: a two- or three-night stopover based in Giza works neatly from Sphinx, because the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara all lie on the western side of the city.
A sample plan for a morning arrival: drop your bags at a Giza hotel, rest through the heat of the day, and spend the late afternoon at the GEM, which is about 2 km from the pyramids. The next morning, be at the Giza Plateau at opening time, then drive about 30 km south to Saqqara for Djoser's Step Pyramid and the Old Kingdom tombs. A final morning could take in Sneferu's pyramids at Dahshur, 10 km beyond Saqqara, before the drive back to the airport. You avoid central Cairo's traffic entirely; the cost is missing Islamic Cairo and the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square.
If the stopover is part of a longer trip, for example on the way to Greece or Italy, our guide to combining Egypt with Europe covers routing, and short-stay visas are explained in our Cairo layover guide.
What if you arrive at one Cairo airport and leave from the other?
Treat Sphinx and Cairo International as two different cities' airports: allow 1.5–2 hours by road between them and never plan a same-day connection on separate tickets without a large buffer.
The drive crosses or circles the whole metropolis on the Ring Road, and traffic is unpredictable. If you are flying into one and out of the other on the same day, leave at least five to six hours between scheduled arrival and departure, or better, stay a night. For departures from Sphinx, arrive two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one; the queues are short, but check-in counters can close earlier than you expect and there are few alternatives if you miss a flight.
If you are linking Cairo with the rest of Egypt, a guide to how the internal network fits together is in domestic flights in Egypt.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sphinx airport closer to the pyramids than Cairo airport?
Yes. Sphinx International is about 30–40 minutes from the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, while Cairo International is about 45–90 minutes away depending on traffic.
Can I fly from Australia to Sphinx International Airport?
Not on a single through ticket at the time of writing. Full-service flights from Australia via Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi land at Cairo International (CAI). Sphinx is served by a small number of regional and low-cost flights.
Can I get a visa on arrival at Sphinx airport?
Arrive with an approved e-Visa from visa2egypt.gov.eg to be safe. Facilities at a small airport can be more limited than at Cairo, and rules change, so check before you fly.
How long does it take to get from Sphinx airport to Cairo airport?
About 1.5–2 hours by road, sometimes longer at peak times. Stay overnight rather than attempting a tight same-day connection between the two.
Is Uber available at Sphinx airport?
Ride-hailing apps work in western Cairo and Giza, but cars can take time to arrive at the airport. A pre-booked transfer is more reliable, especially at night.
