Luxor Airport Guide: Getting to Your Hotel, Nile Cruise or Dahabiya

Quick answer

Luxor International Airport (LXR) is a single-terminal airport about 20 minutes east of the town centre, with flights from Cairo taking about an hour. From the airport it is 15–25 minutes to East Bank hotels and the Nile cruise moorings, 35–50 minutes to the West Bank by the road bridge, and about an hour to Esna, where many dahabiyas begin.

Where is Luxor airport?

Luxor International lies in farmland and desert east of the town, and the drive to the Corniche takes about 20 minutes on a quiet road. It is a compact, single-terminal airport, so arrival is usually quick: from landing on a domestic flight to sitting in your car is often 20–30 minutes.

Facilities are modest: a few cafés, a small duty-free and souvenir area airside, ATMs and exchange counters, and a prayer room. There are no lounges of note for most passengers, so on an early departure eat breakfast at your hotel or on board your ship (most cruise kitchens will prepare a breakfast box if asked the night before).

The town itself is on the East Bank, home to Karnak, Luxor Temple and most hotels and cruise moorings. The Valley of the Kings and the other West Bank sites are across the Nile, reached by a road bridge several kilometres south of the centre or by ferry and motorboat from the Corniche. That bridge is why West Bank transfers take longer than the map suggests.

How long are transfers from Luxor airport?

Most transfers from Luxor airport take 15–25 minutes; only the West Bank, Esna and the long roads to Aswan and the Red Sea take longer.

Taxis wait outside the terminal and should be agreed in advance: confirm the total price in pounds, including bags, before you set off. Ride-hailing apps are far less established in Luxor than in Cairo. Private tours include transfers, and on Noble Travel trips your guide or driver meets you in the arrivals hall. If you are still deciding where to base yourself, our where to stay in Luxor guide compares the banks.

How does joining a Nile cruise from Luxor airport work?

Most Nile cruise ships begin boarding around midday, so a morning flight from Cairo usually goes straight into sightseeing, with lunch and cabin check-in on board in the early afternoon.

  • Your luggage goes to the ship. On a private or escorted itinerary, the driver or ship's crew takes your bags to the cabin while you visit Karnak or Luxor Temple, so pack anything you need for the morning (hat, water, sunscreen) in a day bag.
  • Ships moor side by side. At busy Luxor moorings, cruise boats are rafted up to four or five abreast, and you may walk through the lobbies of other ships to reach yours. It's normal; stewards will guide you.
  • Late arrivals are fine. If your flight lands in the evening, you simply board for dinner or a late snack, and sightseeing follows the next morning.
  • Disembarkation is early. On the last morning, cabins are usually vacated after breakfast. If you have an afternoon flight, arrange sightseeing or a day room so you are not waiting in the lobby.

Whether you sail Luxor to Aswan or the other way changes which airport you fly into and which you leave from; our guide to Nile cruise direction explains the trade-offs, and our Nile cruises guide covers the boats themselves.

What about dahabiya departures from Esna?

Many dahabiyas start or finish at Esna, about an hour south of Luxor, because the shallow-draught sailing boats begin their routes above the Esna lock. A Luxor arrival therefore usually means a morning flight, a drive south along the Nile, and boarding around lunchtime.

Some itineraries visit the Temple of Khnum at Esna before boarding, which makes a natural break in the drive. Others pick passengers up in Luxor itself. Check your boat's embarkation point and time before booking domestic flights, and leave a margin: EgyptAir's Cairo–Luxor schedules can change, and the boat will set sail on a timetable. Our dahabiya sailing tour builds this connection in.

Should you drive to Luxor from Aswan or the Red Sea instead of flying?

Usually yes: direct flights between Luxor and Aswan or Hurghada are infrequent at best, while the roads take 3.5–4 hours and can include temple stops along the way.

The road from Aswan follows the Nile north via Kom Ombo, about 45 km from Aswan, and Edfu, about 110 km from Aswan. With a private car and guide, you can visit both temples and still reach Luxor by late afternoon, turning a transfer into a sightseeing day. From Hurghada, the road crosses the Eastern Desert via Safaga and Qena in about four hours, with a rest stop halfway.

Flying between these cities usually means connecting through Cairo, which takes longer than the drive once you add check-in times. Keep flights for the long legs, Cairo to Luxor or Aswan to Cairo, and use the road in the south. Our domestic flights guide explains which routes are worth flying. On a Nile cruise, of course, the river does this journey for you over three or four nights, stopping at the same temples.

Can you fly into Luxor from overseas?

Yes, Luxor receives some seasonal international flights, mostly from Europe, and has full arrival formalities, but there are no flights from the Gulf hubs most Australians use at the time of writing.

If you do arrive internationally, expect the usual Egyptian sequence of visa (e-Visa recommended; see our Egypt visa guide), immigration, baggage and customs. The arrivals hall is small, with ATMs and exchange counters; card machines and mobile network desks are fewer than at Cairo, so set up an eSIM before you leave home.

The more common use for Australians is an open-jaw itinerary: fly into Cairo, travel south, and start the journey home from Luxor with a same-day connection in Cairo on one ticket, rather than returning to the capital for a night. Allow at least three hours in Cairo for that connection.

How early should you be at Luxor airport, and what should you avoid on flight days?

Allow two hours before a domestic flight; the airport is small, but security screening at the door and at the gate can slow when several flights leave together.

  • Don't stack a balloon flight and an early departure. Luxor balloon flights start before dawn and can be delayed or cancelled by wind; schedule yours for a day with no flight.
  • Use the morning well. With an afternoon flight, the West Bank's early opening hours let you see the Valley of the Kings and still make the airport, as long as you allow 40–50 minutes for the drive from the West Bank.
  • Keep small notes for porters. Tip in Egyptian pounds for help with bags at the hotel, the ship and the terminal kerb.
  • Reconfirm the morning of departure. Domestic schedules are sometimes retimed at short notice; your guide or ship's reception can check for you.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Luxor airport from the city centre?

About 20 minutes by road to the Corniche and the main East Bank hotels. West Bank hotels take 35–50 minutes because the road crosses the Nile on a bridge south of town.

How far is Luxor airport from the Nile cruise ships?

Most cruise moorings are 15–30 minutes from the airport on the East Bank. Ships often moor several abreast, so you may walk through other ships to reach yours.

What time can I board my Nile cruise in Luxor?

Usually from around midday. With a morning flight, sightseeing normally comes first while your luggage goes to the ship.

Are there international flights to Luxor?

Some, mostly seasonal flights from Europe. Travellers from Australia usually fly via Cairo, then take a domestic flight of about an hour to Luxor.

How do I get from Luxor airport to Esna?

By road, about an hour south. Many dahabiyas board at Esna, so plan a morning flight and confirm the boarding time first.
