The Fayoum is a fertile basin about 100 km south-west of Cairo, watered by a Nile canal and ringed by desert. It is close enough for a day trip, but a day trip forces you to choose between the desert and the lake. With two nights you see both, and you see a side of rural Egypt that most visitors never do: sugarcane and palm groves, waterwheels, fishing boats on Lake Qarun and mud-brick villages.
The highlight is Wadi el-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, Egypt's first natural World Heritage Site, where hundreds of fossil skeletons of early whales lie in the sand of a sea that covered the area about 40–37 million years ago. It is about three hours from Giza, with the last stretch on desert track, so staying in the Fayoum lets you reach it before the heat or stay for sunset over the dunes.
The Cairo half covers Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum with a private Egyptologist, and the drive south goes via Meidum, the strange, tower-like pyramid near the entrance to the Fayoum. It is a short trip that works as a second visit to Egypt, an add-on to a longer tour, or a family adventure.

- Day2
Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum
Reach the Giza Plateau at opening time for the Great Pyramid, the panoramic viewpoint and the Sphinx. In the afternoon, visit the Grand Egyptian Museum for the Tutankhamun galleries and the Solar Boat of Khufu.
- Day3
Meidum, Qasr Qarun and Tunis village
Drive south about 100 km to Meidum and climb down inside to its corbelled burial chamber, then continue into the Fayoum. Drive along Lake Qarun to Qasr Qarun, the Ptolemaic temple at its western end, then check in to Tunis village, on a ridge above the lake, and visit its family pottery workshops before sunset.
- Day4
Wadi el-Rayan and Wadi el-Hitan
Set off early by 4WD for Wadi el-Hitan to walk the trail past the whale skeletons, including Basilosaurus and Dorudon with their tiny hind legs, and visit the underground fossil museum. On the way back stop at the Wadi el-Rayan waterfalls and the Magic Lake, with time for sandboarding or the view from Gebel el-Medawara in the late afternoon.

Cairo and Fayoum Oasis in 5 Days: Pyramids, Whale Fossils and Desert Lakes: FAQs
How far is the Fayoum from Cairo?
About 1.5–2 hours from Giza to Lake Qarun and Tunis, and around 3 hours to Wadi el-Hitan, where the last stretch is desert track. Our Fayoum Oasis guide covers the routes.
What is Wadi el-Hitan?
The Valley of the Whales: a desert valley where hundreds of fossil skeletons of early whales lie exposed, the remains of a sea that covered the area about 40–37 million years ago. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. See our Wadi el-Hitan guide.
Are the Wadi el-Rayan waterfalls worth seeing?
They are small cascades linking two man-made lakes, so set your expectations accordingly, but the setting among dunes is lovely and makes an easy stop on the way back from Wadi el-Hitan. Read our Wadi el-Rayan guide.
Where do we stay in the Fayoum?
Usually in a small guesthouse in Tunis village, above Lake Qarun, with mud-brick rooms and home cooking. They are simpler than Giza hotels but full of character; lakeside hotels are an alternative.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes. The whale fossils, the dunes and the pottery workshops are big hits with children, and drive times are shorter than on most Egypt trips. See our Egypt with kids guide.
